PROMISE BOYS

In a powerful collaboration with Macmillan Publishers, Ken Nwadiogbu was commissioned to design the cover for Promise Boys, a breakout murder mystery novel by Nick Brooks. The cover was first unveiled live on Good Morning America on June 13, 2022, and broadcast across the iconic Jumbotron in Times Square.

Before it was a cover, it was a painting. Nwadiogbu created a portrait of three young men to represent the central characters of the novel. Promise Boys tells the story of three boys of color caught in a system designed to fail them. When their principal is murdered, they must race to prove their innocence and untangle the threads of a larger, deeply embedded structure of inequality. Nwadiogbu’s cover mirrors that urgency. His figures are alert, reflective, and strong, standing not just as characters, but as emblems of all those navigating systems stacked against them.

The collaboration bridges the world of storytelling and visual art, using the power of representation to challenge assumptions and spark conversation. As the cover moves from shelves to hands, from screens to minds, it becomes part of a broader movement to tell truer stories, ones where the complexity of Black youth is centered, and their lives are no longer abstracted.

With thanks to author Nick Brooks for the vision, the voice, and the story.
