PACKAGES IN BROWN SKIN

From December 6 to 19, 2021, Packages in Brown Skin transformed the iconic façade of Flannels on Oxford Street, London, into a luminous canvas of presence and perspective. Presented by W1Curates, this digital installation by Ken Nwadiogbu brought conceptual art to one of the busiest streets in the world, magnifying the lived experiences of Africans into monumental form, and positioning stories often marginalized at the heart of the city.

The work is drawn from Nwadiogbu’s ongoing Packages in Brown Skin series, a visual archive of identity, memory, and collective experience. Rendered in rich detail and different colors, each work points to the way Black and brown bodies are constantly represented and defined by external forces, yet still manage to carry stories, cultures, and values that endure.

With every visit, Londoners were invited to look up and see themselves reflected, or challenged.

Known for blending hyperrealism with conceptual and contemporary practice, Nwadiogbu continues his exploration of displacement, community, and Black identity in this ambitious project. From Lagos to London, this work reminds us that visibility is power, and that art belongs as much on the street as it does in the gallery.
