A JOURNEY TO REMEMBER

A Journey to Remember is a collaboration between Ken Nwadiogbu and Flight Logistics, as part of their “Art on Wheels” public art program. Inspired by a desire to take Journey Mercies beyond the static environment of the gallery, a Volkswagen van wrapped in imagery from the Journey Mercies installation began its ongoing journey across London, ferrying precious cargo and sparking unexpected encounters with art in transit.

The vehicle bears a full-body wrap of painted cardboard boxes, each one marked by the faces of migrants. In this context, the van itself becomes a vessel of stories, a moving monument to migration, and a tribute to the invisible systems that enable transformation. Like the migrants it symbolically represents, the vehicle moves between spaces of value, transporting items of cultural and material significance. It becomes an artwork with an engine, a gallery on wheels, and a statement of presence in places where such stories are often unseen.

Unveiled on July 8, 2021, and still active across the city, A Journey to Remember reminds us that movement is not merely physical, it is psychological, emotional, and deeply political. Wherever it goes, it carries with it not just cargo, but history.

Created in collaboration with Flight Logistics, as part of their Art on Wheels program. This is vehicle no. 18 in the Ship Art series.
Made possible with the invaluable assistance of Youcef Mellal.
